Michael Jordan is a former professional basketball player who was born on February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York, although his family relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina when he was still very young. In his high school years, Jordan was recruited by many top basketball programs, and elected to attend the University of North Carolina. While at UNC, Jordan won an NCAA National Championship and the Naismith and Wooden Awards. He was selected by the Chicago Bulls of the NBA in the 1984 draft. After winning three NBA championships with the Bulls, Jordan announced his retirement in 1993. After a brief career as a minor league baseball player, he returned to the Bulls in 1995, and went on to win three more NBA titles. He finally retired for good in 2003 as a member of the Washington Wizards, and is widely regarded as the best player in NBA history. In addition to his college and pro championships, Jordan played on two Gold Medal-winning U.S. Olympic basketball teams. Jordan is the principal owner of the Charlotte Hornets NBA franchise.
