Lynch studied theater at Illinois State University and graduated with a B.A. She later earned an MFA in theater at Cornell University. For many years as a professional actor she performed in theater and with the comedy troupe The Second City. She made her first film appearance in Vice Versa in 1993 and appeared in many other films and television shows, notably as part of director Christopher Guest's regular ensemble. She got her big break in the television show Glee, for which she won both the Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy.
