Box Office Round Up - 10-1-2018

Class was in session over the weekend as the Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish comedy Night School grossed $28 million, and took the number one spot over the weekend. This is slightly lower than analysts predicted, but it's a solid start for the film. Despite a couple of major blockbusters opening in the next couple weeks (Venom and A Star is Born), the film should have strong legs. This should make UTA happy as they represent star, co-writer and producer Kevin Hart, as well as co-star Taran Killam. Paradigm will be happy too, as they represent director Malcolm D. Lee. APA reps Tiffany Haddish.

Coming in second place with $23 million was the animated yeti comedy Smallfoot. The film hit analysts expectations, and considering there’s not much family fare at the moment the film should stick around the top ten for a bit. WME should be pleased with these results – they represent director/co-writer Karey Kirkpatrick. UTA will get in on the action as they represent star Channing Tatum, while CAA represents co-stars Zendaya and Gina Rodriguez.

Coming in third place with $13 million was The House With a Clock in Its Walls. The film has now made $45 million domestically. This is a 53% drop from last week. The film has yet to fully open overseas, and has only made $9 million internationally at the moment.

Continuing its strong performance, Paul Feig’s A Simple Favor came in fourth with $6.6 million. This is a 36% drop from last week. The film has now grossed $43 million domestically and $19 million internationally.

Rounding out the top five with $5.4 million was the Conjuring spinoff The Nun. The film has now grossed $109 million domestically, and the film’s worldwide take is now $330 million – making it the highest grossing film in the Conjuring franchise.

Opening in a disappointing sixth place is the retro slasher Hell Fest. Falling out of the top five and into seventh place is romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians. The Predator continued its box office spiral and also fell out of the top five, all the way down to eighth place. White Boy Rick and Peppermint took ninth and tenth place, respectively.

Next week: It’s a big one, as the Tom Hardy Spider-Man spin-off Venom goes head-to-head against Bradley Cooper’s Lady Gaga-starring A Star is Born remake. Also YA adaptation The Hate U Give opens in limited release.
