Box Office Round Up - 8-13-2018

The giant shark chomped its way to number one at the box office this weekend. The Meg took in $44 million, outperforming expectations and making more than recent shark attack movies, such as 47 Meters Down and The Shallows. The folks at WME should be celebrating this Monday, as they represent director Jon Turteltaub and co-writer Dean Georgaris. But CAA will get in the shark party as they represent star Jason Statham. Don’t leave out UTA as they represent co-stars Li Bingbing and Ruby Rose.

Dropping to second place was Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which took in $20 million. The film has made $162 million domestically with a worldwide total of $437 million. The film still has strong legs and will probably stay in the top ten for a good long while.

Coming in third with a $12 million take is Disney’s Christopher Robin. The film has a domestic cume of $50 million and $12 million internationally.

Horror movie newcomer Slender Man took fourth place with $11 million. It’s slightly better than predicted, but considering the film got a “D-” Cinemascore don’t expect this one to stick around. Regardless UTA should be happy this morning as they rep director Sylvain White and stars Joey King and Julia Goldani Telles.

Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman opened in fifth place, also with $11 million. This is a strong start for the film which received an “A-” Cinemascore. ICM should be happy as they rep director and co-writer Lee and co-star Topher Grace. WME will also be pleased as they rep star John David Washington. Gersh reps co-star Adam Driver.

The Spy Who Dumped Me fell out of the top five and into sixth place, as did Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again which came in seventh. The Equalizer 2 dropped to eighth place. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation and Ant-Man and the Wasp fell to ninth and tenth respectively.

Next Week: Mark Wahlberg and one of the guys from The Raid take down terrorists in Mile 22, Constance Wu meets Michelle Yeoh (her crazy mother in law) in Crazy Rich Asians and Kodi Smit-McPhee is the first human to domesticate a dog in Alpha.
