Box Office Round-Up ~ 7/7/25

The Jurassic Park/World franchise has been one of Universal Studios’ most reliable franchises since the original stomped into theaters back in 1993, grossing over $6 billion worldwide. And even in today’s unsteady theatrical market, Jurassic World: Rebirth proved to be no exception. The seventh installment in the series grossed $92 million over the weekend, down slightly from the previous three World movies, but had the benefit of an extended opening weekend thanks to Independence Day. Over its first five days, it took in $147 million in the U.S., putting on track to clear $200 million in the next couple weeks.
F1: The Movie dropped to second place for a sophomore weekend total of $25.7 million, passing $100 million domestically. And Universal’s other big lizard blockbuster, How to Train Your Dragon, finished up its first month in theaters with $11.2 million, putting it on the cusp of $225 million overall. In fourth place, Elio took in $5.7 million, while 28 Years Later rounded out the top five with $4.5 million.
This coming weekend (June 11) sees the arrival of arguably the most anticipated movie of the summer. The latest Superman, written and directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad), is the first chapter in DC and Warner Bros. newly revamped DC cinematic universe. Superhero fatigue is very real in cinemas these days, with the new defunct DCEU ending with a serious of box office disappointments (including Black Adam, Blue Beetle and The Flash) and Disney/Marvel seeing the MCU struggling to regain its former box office dominance.
Superman has always been a tougher sell to audiences than the likes of Batman and Spider-Man. Since the landmark original Superman in 1978, the Last Son of Krypton’s films have grossed $3.2 billion worldwide, compared to $7.9 billion for Bats and $8.9 billion for Spidey (and that’s not even including the likes of Avengers: Endgame). Like Superman Returns and Man of Steel before it, Superman will doubtlessly have its fan and its detractors… the question remains whether either or both group will carry the film to box office success.
