Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/23/25

In what was sort of a holiday weekend (with Juneteenth falling mid-week on a Thursday), How to Train Your Dragon retained the top spot against a pair of new arrivals, grossing $36.5 million in its sophomore weekend and passing $160 million overall in the U.S. The new releases in question were 28 Years Later and Elio, both of which fell short of expectations numbers-wise.
Second place went to 28 Years Later, the long-awaited threequel from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland (the duo behind the original 28 Days Later back in 2002… and yes, that’s only 23 years ago, but who’s counting…). The post-apocalypse thriller debuted with $30 million, already passing 2007’s 28 Weeks Later’s overall domestic gross and putting it on track to pass the original within a week or two. It’s a disappointing number by modern standards though, and competition going into July might be tough (especially with M3GAN 2.0 coming this weekend).
Also disappointing was the opening weekend for Disney/Pixer’s Elio. The sci-fi comedy made just $20.8 million domestically, the lowest opening weekend ever for Pixar. To look on the bright side, Elementals also had a disappointing opening weekend two years ago and ended up holding steady for several weeks afterwards to end up a success. There isn’t much in the way of family friendly counter-programming on the horizon (besides the latest Smurfs reboot in late July), so there might be hope for Elio yet.
Lilo & Stitch continued its successful box office run in fourth place, grossing $9.7 million in its fifth weekend and closing in on $400 million overall in the U.S. Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning stayed in the top five as well, grossing $6.4 million for a $178 million after five weekends.
June wraps up with another eclectic trio of new releases… the aforementioned M3GAN 2.0, Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick follow-up F1: The Movie, and A24’s Sorry, Baby from writer/director/star Eva Victor. July then kicks off with Universal doubling down on big lizards as they return to their most reliable money-printer with Jurassic World: Rebirth.
