Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/16/25

Universal Studios’ first foray into remakes of animated classics was a soaring success, as their live-action adaptation of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon grossed $84.6 million in its domestic opening weekend.
It’s the best opening weekend of the entire franchise, which has been entirely directed or co-directed by Dean DeBlois, who incidentally also co-directed the original animated Lilo & Stitch back in 2002. If they haven’t already, Universal will doubtless start looking at the rest of their DreamWorks (Megamind, The Boss Baby, etc.) and Illumination (The Secret Life of Pets) libraries to seek what’s remake-worthy next.
Lilo & Stitch continued its own successful remake run, grossing $15.7 million in its fourth weekend for an overall domestic total of $366 million so far. New release Materialists debuted in third place. The romantic comedy, written and directed by Celine Song (Past Lives) and starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, opened with a solid $12 million.
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning took fourth place with a better-than-expected $10.5 million for $166 million overall, while From the World of John Wick: Ballerina rounded out the top five with $9.7 million in its second weekend, passing $42 million total. This coming weekend sees an eclectic trio of new releases: long-awaited horror threequel 28 Weeks Later from director Danny Boyle, Rebel Wilson-led action comedy Bride Hard, and the latest of Disney/Pixar, sci-fi adventure Elio.
