Box Office Round-Up ~ 5/19/25

It’s turning into a banner year for Warner Bros., who can now boast three of the five biggest opening weekends of 2025 so far (and six of the ten best weekends overall). After the successes of A Minecraft Movie and Sinners, the $51.6 million debut of Final Destination: Bloodlines was a bit of a surprise, surpassing expected numbers by several million. It’s the biggest opening weekend ever for the 25-year-old horror franchise, though it may drop a bit against the crowded field of Memorial Day weekend.

Thunderbolts* moved to second place in its third weekend, clearing $150 million domestically with $16.6 million. While its critical reaction has been far more positive, it may actually end up doing similar domestic numbers to Captain America: Brave New World, though a big part of that may be the tougher competition from fellow springtime blockbusters.

Speaking of which, Sinners finished its fifth weekend in theaters with $15.2 million, grossing $240 million so far in the U.S. As we predicted last week, it passed Logan and The Exorcist on the all-time highest grossing R-rated movies list, and will probably settle in somewhere between The Matrix Reloaded ($281 million) and The Hangover ($277 million) when all is said and done.

A Minecraft Movie took fourth place with $5.9 million after seven weekends, while The Accountant 2 (the only non-Disney or WB entry in the top five) finished in fifth with $4.7 million, closing in on $60 million overall.

Memorial Day weekend sees yet another live-action adaptation of an animated Disney classic, in this case Lilo & Stitch. Paramount hopes to shake up the blockbuster field with Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (especially after Dead Reckoning’s disappointing box office performance in 2023). Other notable releases include The Last Rodeo from Angel Studios and the expansion of A24’s Friendship, starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, which has been doing incredible per-theater numbers in its limited run.
