Box Office Round-Up ~ 4/28/25

The final weekend of April saw Sinners continue its remarkable run at the box office, surpassing all expectation by dropping just 6% in its second weekend, grossing $45.6 million for a domestic total of $123 million in less than two weeks. It may not hold the top spot for a third weekend with a new Marvel movie incoming, but this is an unquestionable success for Warner Bros. and a big win for original IP (if studios choose to meet the moment).
Equally impressive was a 20-year-old veteran returning to the top five, as the theatrical re-release of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith took second place with $25.4 million. It’s one of the best opening weekends for a re-release ever, surpassing any of Star Wars’ many re-releases since the Special Editions hit theaters in 1997 (the most recent being Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, which took in $8.7 million last year).
Perhaps a victim of Sinners and Revenge of the Sith’s unexpected success, The Accountant 2 had to settle for third place with $24.5 million. That’s comparable to its predecessor’s opening weekend back in 2016 (which was a much friendlier theatrical environment, to be sure), though it remains to be seen if it can reach The Accountant’s $152 million domestic total.
A Minecraft Movie continued to add to its massive haul after four weekends, grossing $22.7 million in fourth place for $379 million domestically. It has cleared $800 million globally, so $400 million in the U.S. and a billion worldwide isn’t out of the question. Until Dawn had to settle for the scraps in the top five, as horror audiences (and critics) stuck with Sinners, leaving it with just $8 million total.
There is clearly something in the air with re-releases. Movies like Interstellar and Coraline have had recent success on the big screen, to say nothing of the Star Wars prequels. It’s a low-risk investment for movie studios and a mild boost in profits for theater chains. Next weekend sees Fathom Events bring another classic, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, back for a wide release. Two more horror titles also see their debut: Rosario and Nicolas Cage-led The Surfer. Most notably of course is the aforementioned MCU release, Thunderbolts*, which begins Marvel Studios’ build to next year’s Avengers: Doomsday.
