Box Office Round-Up ~ 3/5/25

Like the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day before it, Oscar weekend made a dent in the theatrical box office. Captain America: Brave New World may not be making bank by Marvel standards, but it continued to retain the top weekend spot with $14.8 million, passing $163 million in the U.S. and over $344 million worldwide. It could end up within striking distance of $500 million by the end of its run, putting it in same league as Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger from the early days of the MCU.
Underwater survival thriller Last Breath, starring Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu was the only new release in the top five, taking second place with $7.8 million. The Monkey moved to third place in its sophomore weekend, grossing $6.4 million to pass $24 million domestically.
Lack of horror competition may boost the Stephen King adaptation’s numbers for the rest of March, though it may not live up to the performance of director Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs last July. Either way, it’s at least the second highest-grossing movie in the now-prolific horror director’s career, and he has yet another movie, Keeper, coming this October.
Paddington in Peru and Dog Man returned to take fourth and fifth place with a respective $4.5 million and $4.2 million. Outside the top five, multiple Oscar winners saw box office bumps, with the likes of Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave and The Substance all improving on last week’s numbers. Speaking of the Oscar, this coming weekend is headlined by sci-fi dark comedyMickey 17, from Best Director winner Bong Joon-ho.
