Box Office Round-Up ~ 1/10/24

Wonka held strong for the first full weekend of 2024, grossing $14 million in its fourth weekend for a domestic total of $164 million, passing The Greatest Showman as the highest grossing holiday musical in recent years. The other big winner of the weekend was Anyone But You, even if it was down in fifth place. The romantic comedy from director and co-writer Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends With Benefits) actually improved on its numbers from last weekend to gross $9.7 million, passing $40 million overall. If this success is any indicator, there may yet be a demand for more mid-budget romantic comedies, a genre that has been more or less relegated to streaming over the past few years.

In between the musical and the rom-com, new horror release Night Swim had a somewhat muted debut, landing in second place with $11.7 million. It may yet show some durability, but right now it’s falling short of the numbers done by M3GAN a year ago at this time.

In third place, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom finally passed $100 million overall, pulling in $10.6 million in its third weekend on the big screen. It will pass The Flash on the DCEU overall list this week. Also in its third weekend, animated comedy Migration cleared $70 million with a fourth-place gross of $9.9 million. It’ll face some competition from the re-release of Disney/Pixar’s Soul this coming weekend, but remains the top choice for families looking for some post-holiday moviegoing.
