Box Office Round-Up ~ 5/22/23

As expected, Fast X was first across the finish line at the box office this weekend, taking the top spot with a debut domestic gross of $67 million. It’s the fifth best U.S. opening weekend of 2023, but its $251 million international gross is the best worldwide so far this year. Whether it can outrace The Little Mermaid next weekend remains to be seen, but even after ten films, the international appeal of the Vin Diesel-led franchise remains as strong as ever.

In second place, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 lost some of its audience to the extended Toretto family, netting $32 million in its third weekend in theaters. $300 million overall domestically isn’t out of reach, but either way the film can be considered a successful rebound for Disney and the MCU. In third place, The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed $9.6 million, putting it less than $1 million away from $650 million overall in the U.S. It’s now the second highest-grossing animated film of all time.

Rounding out the top five were Book Club: The Next Chapter, with a solid hold in fourth place with $3 million, thanks to its counter-programming status opposite the street racing and intergalactic superheroes. And similarly, albeit on the other end of the genre spectrum, Evil Dead Rise entered its second month in theaters with a weekend total of $2.4 million.
