Box Office Round-Up ~ 8/15/22

Despite their blazing fast subjects, it was a slow weekend at the box office as Bullet Train topped the charts for the second weekend in a row with $13.4 million, unthreatened by any new releases. It’s on track for a solid-if-not-flashy $100+ million domestic gross, especially with few new tentpoles on the horizon for the rest of August and September.

In second place, not quite faster than a speeding bullet train, DC League of Super-Pets grossed $7.17 million, with roughly $97 million total domestic after three weeks in theaters. Its numbers are looking slightly better than The Bad Guys from earlier this year, perhaps bolstered by the DC brand and the all-star cast, including Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart.

And with all these bullet trains and super-pets flying around, it should come as no surprise that Top Gun: Maverick decided one weekend was enough time outside the top five. The biggest hit of the year soared back into third place with $7.15 million. Another weekend like this, and it will pass Avengers: Infinity War as the sixth highest grossing domestic release of all time.

Rounding out the top five were Thor: Love and Thunder and Nope, respectively, neck and neck for fourth and fifth place. Love and Thunder’s weekend gross of $5.31 million solidifies it as the most successful Thor movie domestically, and puts it in the top 15 titles in the entire MCU. Hot on its heels was Nope with $5.3 million. With $108 million, it has now surpassed The Lost City as the highest grossing original title of 2022.
