Weekend Report, June 24, 2013

Pixar's streak of #1 openings now rests at 14 (and it's unclear what, if anything, could put an end to the run any time soon). This time around it was Monsters University taking the top spot, with $82M for its opening weekend—a tally good for Pixar's second best ever, behind Toy Story 3. While it's business as usual in the digital toon universe, the big surprise of the weekend was Brad Pitt's World War Z, which took in a hefty $66M amid tales of a dysfunctional production and bloated budget. Producer-star Pitt, as well as director Marc Forster and studio Paramount, must have heaved a huge sigh of relief this morning... and maybe even started preparing to have the last laugh.
