Weekend Report, December 16, 2013
While the second installment in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy (yes, there is a third one due) did not match the opening of its predecessor, it could have easily been swallowed up in the holiday shuffle. Instead, the film opened to a robust $73.7M, reinforcing the basic truth that people love Hobbits. Tyler Perry's latest Madea film, A Madea Christmas, may have been the lowest grossing Madea release to date, but as "flops" go, most would be overjoyed with $16M on opening weekend.
