Box Office Round Up - 6-11-2018

Ocean’s 8 took the number one spot right out from Solo this weekend with a opening haul of $42 million. This was higher than most analysts were predicting. And is a solid start for the heist film. It will be interesting to see how well this one fairs going forward. On the one hand it could play as nice counter programming to the big blockbusters. On the other its staring down the barrel of the one two punch of Incredibles 2 this week and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom the following week. In any event, the folks at CAA are probably happy about this result as they rep just about everyone involved such as co-writer and director Gary Ross and stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway.

In second place with $15 million is Solo: A Star Wars Story. The film is still underperforming and now has a domestic total of $176 million. Internationally the film has mostly bottomed out and now has a total of $136 million with a worldwide gross of $312 million.

Coming in third place with $14 million was superhero sequel Deadpool 2. The film has now grossed $280 million domestic and $655 million worldwide.

Opening in fourth place was the horror film Hereditary that brought in $13 million. This beats out most analysts’ predictions and is the highest opening weekend for A24’s highest opening weekend. Considering the film only cost a reported $10 million, this is a good start for the film. WME should be happy with this result as they rep first time feature director Ari Aster, and CAA reps stars Toni Collette and Alex Wolff.

Dropping to fifth place with $6.8 million was Avengers: Infinity War. Domestically the film has now made $650 million and is THIS close to making $2 billion worldwide.

The Shailene Woodley survival drama Adrift dropped to sixth place, while Book Club fell to seventh. New release Hotel Artemis had a disappointing debut in eighth place, while cyberpunk thriller Upgrade came in ninth. The Melissa McCarthy back to college comedy is now in tenth place.

Next Week: The highly anticipated sequel to The Incredibles opens, along with true story action comedy Tag. I’m willing to bet Incredibles 2 takes number one (safest bet in the world).
