Box Office Round Up - 5-7-2018

Surprising absolutely no one, Avengers: Infinity War continued to top the box office this week with a $112 million total. And that’s not all! The superhero crossover crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, the fastest film in history to do so and the sixth Marvel film to accomplish that feat.

In second place with $15 million was Overboard – the Anna Faris starring remake of the 1987 Goldie Hawn-Kurt Russell film. The film performed a little lower than analysts expected, but a touch higher than the studio expected. Hard to say how this will do going forward as the end of May has two major blockbusters being released – but it could stick around as a palette cleanser to the CGI explosions. In any case the folks at UTA should be happy as they represent stars Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez. ICM represents director/co-writer Rob Greenberg.

In third place with $7.6 million is A Quiet Place, which is continuing its truly impressive run, now having a domestic grand total of $160 million. Considering the film had a budget of $17 million that’s pretty damn good.

Dropping to fourth place with $4.9 million was the Amy Schumer starring I Feel Pretty. The film has now amassed a domestic total of $37.8 million.

In fifth place with $4.6 million is the giant monster flick Rampage, which has now made $85 million domestically.

Outside the top five – Jason Reitman’s Tully came in sixth, which is under industry expectations and a bit of a disappointment for Focus Features who opted to release the film wide instead of building word of mouth through a limited release. Still the film has strong reviews, so it could still bring things back around. WME reps director Jason Reitman, writer Diabo Cody and star Charlize Theron.

In seventh place, still in the top ten after almost three months in release, is Black Panther. The film is close to making $700 million domestically – only the third film to ever do so. Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare dropped down to eighth place, while Super Troopers 2 dropped down to ninth. In tenth place was Bad Samaritan, which is basically a bomb.

Next Week: Gabrielle Union fends off home invaders in Breaking In, and Melissa McCarthy goes back to school in Life of the Party. Avengers will still dominate the number one spot, but these two should have solid numbers.
