Box Office Round Up - 5-21-2018
Deadpool 2 took the top number one this week with $125 million. While the R-rated superhero comedy didn’t do quite as well as analysts predicted it still broke a few records – second largest R-rated opening ever (right behind the first film’s $132.4 million), it’s also the second highest opening Fox opening of all time. Not bad for the merc with a mouth (check out our review here). WME should be happy as they represent writers Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick, the other co-writer and star Ryan Reynolds, and director David Leitch. It will be interesting to see what kind of legs Deadpool 2 has considering it will be contending with Solo: A Star Wars Story next weekend. However, the film doesn’t have another superhero movie to deal with until Ant Man & the Wasp in July.
Coming in second with $29 million is Avengers: Infinity War, which is continuing its impressive box office run with a domestic total of $594 million in just 24 days, making it the eighth largest domestic release of all time.
In third place with $12 million is Book Club coming in a little higher than most analysts predicted – working as counter programming to all the explosions and wisecracks. The film received an A- cinemascore so expect this one to have a fair amount of legs. WME should be pleased with this result as they represent director/co-writer Bill Holderman, co-writer Erin Simms and star Diane Keaton.
With $7.7 million and falling into fourth place is the Melissa McCarthy vehicle Life of the Party. Falling 57% from last weekend.
And in fifth place is Breaking In with $6.5 million falling 67% since last week. Even though that’s quite the drop the film has made a total of $28.75 which is more than 4 times its budget.
Outside the top five – In sixth place, the family film Show Dogs which had one of the worst openings of all time for a film opening in 3,000 theaters. Falling to seventh place was the Overboard remake. While A Quiet Place fell to eighth place it still is doing really well, only dropping 37% from last week. Dwayne Johnson and his giant gorilla came in ninth with Rampage. And holding over from last week in tenth place is the documentary RBG which expanded to more theaters.
Next Week: A young Han Solo takes the silver screen for memorial day weekend in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Will it take the top spot at the…you know what? I can’t even finish this sentence – OF COURSE it will take the weekend (look for our review on Friday).
