Box Office Round Up - 5-14-2018

Avengers: Infinity War continued to dominate the box office this weekend with a $62 million haul. And the film also broke some box office records while it was at it – eighth largest domestic release ever, highest grossing international superhero release of all time, and the fifth largest international release of all time. If anyone complains about superhero fatigue at the box office you can go ahead and laugh in their faces.

Coming in second place with $18 million was the Melissa McCarthy starrer Life of the Party. This take was a little lower than expectations and the lowest opening for Melissa McCarthy. The film should kick around the top ten for a bit as the summer movie season starts heating up in earnest. But CAA should be happy as they rep McCarthy and co-writer and director Ben Falcone.

In third place with $16 million is the Gabrielle Union home invasion thriller Breaking In. Which also came in lower than analysts expected, BUT higher than the studio expected. CAA should also be in good spirits with this one as the agency reps director James McTeigue, writer Ryan Engle, and Gabrielle Union.

Dropping to fourth place with $10 million is the Overboard remake starring Anna Faris. And in fifth place with $6.5 million is John Krasinki’s A Quiet Place still going strong with a domestic total of $170 million.

Outside the top five – Amy Schumer’s I Feel Pretty fell into sixth place, while the Dwayne Johnson starring monster flick Rampage went to seventh. Jason Reitman’s Tully came in eighth. Black Panther which is still in the top ten after 13 weeks of release came in ninth. And just squeaking in is the Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary – RBG.

Next Week: The merc with a mouth goes head to head with Earth’s mightiest heroes as Deadpool 2 opens. Jane Fonda and Alicia Silverstone join a Book Club, and Will Arnett solves crimes with a dog in Show Dogs. The big question is can Deadpool 2 beat the Avengers? Find out next week!
