Box Office Round Up - 4-9-2018

Box Office Round Up - 4-9-2018

The big news this weekend was John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, which took the top spot with a $50 million take. This makes the film a bonafide hit that will have legs in the months ahead. This proves that genre films, especially horror films, will always equal big box office – all you need to do is look at the box office takes for Get Out, The Conjuring films, and a smattering of Blumhouse movies for that to be proven true. WME should be very happy with this as they rep writer/director/star John Krasinski, and CAA should be happy too, as they rep co-star Emily Blunt.

In second place with $25 million is Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. It dropped just 40%, indicating that it has strong word of mouth – the film is doing even more impressively overseas and has grossed $400 million world wide.

Coming in third is the R-rated comedy Blockers with $21 million. This will likely hang around the top ten for a bit, even with bigger movies like Rampage and the third Avengers film coming down the pike, as it provides nice counter programming to all the explosions. WME, repping director Kay Cannon and breakout star Geraldine Viswanathan, should be happy with this. CAA meanwhile reps star Leslie Bibb, and ICM reps John Cena.

In fourth place with $8.4 million is Black Panther.  This pushes the film’s domestic total to $665 million, surpassing Titanic as the third highest grossing domestic release of all time. Finishing up the top five, and still holding strong, is the faith based I Can Only Imagine, with $8.3 million.

In the top ten -- Tyler Perry’s Acrimony dropped to sixth place, while newcomer Chappaquiddick came in seventh. In eighth and ninth place were Sherlock Gnomes and Pacific Rim: Uprising. In tenth place was Isle of Dogs which started to expand to more theaters and will be released nationwide next week.

Next Week: Dwayne Johnson and his friend George (a giant gorilla) are gonna fight monsters in Rampage, some teens get into supernatural mischief with Truth or Dare, and the animated film Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero also comes to the party.
