Box Office Round Up - 4-16-2018

Rampage crashed and bashed its way to number one at the box office this week with a $34 million haul. This isn’t a smashing debut, but it’s not terrible. The problem Rampage faces going forward is Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, which opens in two weeks. So the film has only got one unopposed weekend before getting steamrolled by the superhero juggernaut. However, this is not a disappointment by any means, and CAA should be happy as they represent director Brad Peyton. WME should be happy as well repping star Dwayne Johnson.

The really interesting box office discussion, however, is John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, which came in second place with $33 million. The film continues to be a major hit and has made $100 million domestically after ten days of release. Clearly the film has legs, and will continue to be in the top ten for a while.

In third place was the other newcomer this week – Blumhouse’s horror film Truth or Dare coming in with $19 million. This is a solid debut for the film, which, much like A Quiet Place will have some legs as a counter programmer to all the explosions and yelling coming down the pike. UTA reps writer/director Jeff Wadlow. ICM reps star Lucy Hale. And co-stars Tyler Posey and Violett Beane are repped by Gersh and The Kohner agency, respectively.

In fourth place with $11 million is Ready Player One. Blockers dropped from third place to fifth place with $10 million, a surprise to analysts who thought it would have more legs.

Dropping out of the top five for the first time in almost three months is Marvel’s Black Panther, which is now in sixth place. Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs expanded nationwide this weekend and came in seventh. The faith-based I Can Only Imagine dropped out of the top five and into eighth place. Tyler Perry’s Acrimony and Chappaquiddick round out the top ten in ninth and tenth place, respectively.

Next week: Amy Schumer goes from nottie to hottie in I Feel Pretty, mustache rides all around in Super Troopers 2, and Paula Patton and Omar Epps fight off a biker gang in Traffik.
