Box Office Round Up - 2-5-2018

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is back on top! After one week in the number two spot, the Dwayne Johnson starring adventure reboot pulled ahead of The Maze Runner:The Death Cure to number one with $11 million. Maze Runner, meanwhile pulled in $10 million. In third place with $9.2 million was the Lionsgate horror film Winchester, which performed as expected, which is to say…okay. And while it’s not a resounding success it’s still profitable and should make UTA happy as they represent writer/directors Michael and Peter Spierig and co-star Sarah Snook. CAA represents star Helen Mirren, and WME reps Jason Clarke.

Still holding strong, The Greatest Showman remains where it was last week with a $7.8 million take. This continues Showman’s amazing domestic run. This should make CAA happy as they represent director Michael Gracey and star Zac Efron, and WME should also be delighted with this performance as they rep stars Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams.  Rounding out the top five is Hostiles with a $5.5 million take.

In the top ten are a couple Oscar heavy-hitters with Steven Spielberg’s The Post coming in sixth, and The Shape of Water coming in ninth. 12 Strong, Den of Thieves, and Paddington 2 are in seventh, eighth, and tenth place respectively.

Next week: The Fifty Shades of Grey saga comes to a close with Fifty Shades Freed – just in time for Valentine’s Day. Sony Animation’s Peter Rabbit will provide counter-programming for the kids, and Clint Eastwood’s true-story drama The 15:17 to Paris is counter-counter programming for the “adults.”
