Weekend Box Office Report - 10-23-2017

It was another rough weekend for newcomers at the box office – with only three out of five new wide releases cracking the top 10 and only two cracking the top five.

The Tyler Perry machine continues to churn out hits. Surprising absolutely no one, Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween topped the weekend with $22 million. This is the seventh of eight Madea movies to open with over $21 million. This should make writer/director/star Tyler Perry’s reps at WME happy as Madea could now be an annual fixture at Halloween.

WME should be happy with the box office overall this week as Happy Death Day continues its streak, making $9.4 million this weekend and bringing its domestic gross to $40 million. The agency reps director Christopher Landon.

CAA on the other hand didn’t have such a great weekend. Warner Bros’ Gerard-Butler-fights-a-hurricane film, Geostorm, underperformed, garnering only $13 million. The agency reps director and co-writer Dean Devlin, as well as stars Gerard Butler and Jim Sturgess. Blade Runner 2049 continues to have a box office run like its predecessor (that is, underperforming), and dropped three places this weekend while making only $7.2 million. Director Denis Villeneuve and stars Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto are all CAA clients. CAA’s hands are also all over Only the Brave, which made a not-unexpected $6 million despite having good reviews and an “A” CinemaScore. The agency reps director Joseph Kosinski, writers Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer, and stars Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, and Josh Brolin.
