Box Office Round Up - 1-8-2018

An upset! Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has taken the number one spot at the box office this week with a $36 million take. This is the adventure film’s third week in release and for it to take the lead is pretty surprising. It is now Kevin Hart’s highest grossing live action release of all time and Dwayne Johnson’s second highest grossing live action release. Those two facts should be making WME (who reps Johnson) and UTA (who reps Hart) very happy.

In second place with $29.3 million is the fourth installment in the Insidious franchise – Insidious: The Last Key. This should make CAA happy as they represent director Adam Robitel and star Rose Byrne. And Paradigm should be happy as well as they represent writer/exec producer and co-creator of the series Leigh Whannell.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi dropped to third place this week with a total of $23.5 million. And while that might seem like a bad omen for the film, it’s important to remember that Jedi is the highest grossing movie of 2017, and the sixth largest domestic opening of all time. What is an interesting wrinkle for Star Wars success is that the film opened in China this weekend and fell short of both previous Star Wars films, Rogue One and The Force Awakens.

In fourth and fifth place respectively are The Greatest Showman and Pitch Perfect 3.

The interesting thing to note about the rest of the top ten is that Molly’s Game opened wide this weekend and came in at number 7 with a domestic cume of $7 million. Which CAA should be happy about as they represent writer/director Aaron Sorkin and star Jessica Chastain.

Next week: Liam Neeson is gonna kick ass and take names in The Commuter, an adorable teddy bear comes back for seconds in Paddington 2, and Taraji P. Henson gets in on the asskicking with Proud Mary. Who will win? We’ll find out next week.
