Box Office Round Up - 1-29-2018

The third and final film in the Maze Runner series took the number one spot over the weekend with a $24 million haul, knocking Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle down into second place (with a still-strong $16 million). APA should be happy with this result as they rep director Wes Ball – who also directed the other two entries in the series. ICM should be happy as they rep writer T.S. Nowlin, while actors Dylan O’Brien and Thomas Brodie-Sangster are repped by WME. CAA reps actress Kaya Scodelario.

In third place is Hostiles with an overperforming $10 million take. This is not too shabby as this was the film’s nationwide expansion. CAA should be in a good mood today as they represent writer/director Scott Cooper and star Rosamund Pike. WME represents star Christian Bale.

The Greatest Showman is still holding strong, and landed in fourth place with a $9.5 million take. Showman overtook The Post, which came in fifth with $8.8 million.

Outside of the top five, the Chris Hemsworth vehicle 12 Strong dropped down to number six, while Den of Thieves dropped to number seven. The Shape of Water came blazing into number eight helped by the film’s thirteen Oscar nominations. Paddington 2 came in at number nine, while the foreign language limited release Padmaavat, which has caused great controversy in different parts of the world, made a remarkable showing stateside.

Meanwhile, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has slipped out of the top ten completely.

Next week: The only wide release is the Helen Mirren starring horror film Winchester – a sort of counter programmer to the Superbowl.
