Box Office Round Up - 1-22-2018

For the third straight week Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle took the number one spot at the box office with a $20 million haul. This puts the sequel into the top 80 of worldwide box office all time. The weekend overall was strong for newcomers, like the Chis Hemsworth fighting terrorists on horseback film, 12 Strong, which over-performed and came in second place with $16 million. This should make WME happy, as they represent director Nicolai Fuglsig; CAA will be a happy camper too, as they represent writer Peter Craig, and stars Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon.

In third place with $15.3 million comes the Gerard Butler, 50 Cent starring heist film Den of Thieves, which also over-performed. This is good news for WME, who represents writer/director Christian Gudegast and Pablo Schrieber. CAA and APA should also be pleased with the results, since they represent Butler and 50 Cent respectively.

In fourth place, coming down from number two last weekend, is The Post with $12 million, and in fifth, still holding strong, is Fox’s The Greatest Showman with $11 million.

Outside the top five, Paddington 2 is hanging on to sixth place, while The Commuter drops to seventh place. Star Wars: The Last Jedi has slipped out of the top five and into eighth place, and Insidious: The Last Key comes in ninth. At number ten is the new release Forever My Girl, which didn’t do too poorly and analysts are predicting the movie will have legs.

Next week: The Maze Runner series finally wraps up, and Hostiles goes wide. Also, the Oscar nominations will be announced on Tuesday, and that could certinaly impact the box office.
