Box Office Round-Up ~ 10/5/26
The first weekend of October at the box office went to new release Verity, starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, based on the book from bestselling author Colleen Hoover (Regretting You). Winning the weekend with $32 million, it’s the biggest opening for a Hoover adaptation since It Ends With Us in 2024. Coming in second place, Resident Evil finished its third weekend in theaters with $12.6 million for an overall domestic total of $125 million so far.
Heart of the Beast hung on to third place in its second weekend with $10.8 million, reaching $38 million total. It’s now director David Ayer’s highest grossing movie since 2024’s The Beekeeper. In fifth place, Primetime grossed $8 million to reach $34 million after two weekends, but the bigger story was the release of Digger, just slightly ahead in fourth place in its debut weekend.
Coming off an extensive marketing campaign throughout the summer, the latest film from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu (The Revenant) and leading man Tom Cruise opened to an underwhelming $8 million. With a budget of at least $125 million, it marks the latest high-profile disappointment from Warner Bros. as they merge with Paramount and Skydance. Critical and audience response has been divisive, and no one can fault the studio or the filmmakers for taking a big swing, but this is obviously not the box office performance anyone involved was hoping for.
