Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/8/26

Apparently horror’s hot streak at the box office extends to horror parodies too, as the Scary Movie franchise returned to theaters after a thirteen year absence. The sixth film in the series, simply titled Scary Movie, had the biggest opening weekend of any film in the series with $54.3 million. Its success knocked fellow new release Masters of the Universe to second place, debuting with a disappointing $29.4 million. There are plenty of possible reasons why the long awaited He-Man adventure underperformed, but more than likely the IP simply doesn’t have the younger audience needed for summer blockbuster success.

Backrooms and Obsession continued their box office success in third and fourth place, grossing a respective $25.9 million and $25.3 million, both films comfortably clearing the $100 million mark and then some. In fifth place, The Amazing Digital Circus: Last Act (a big screen debut for the Australian independent animated web series) grossed $12.3 million.

This coming weekend’s biggest new release comes from a director who may as well be an IP unto himself. Steven Spielberg’s latest film, Disclosure Day, marks his return to sci-fi alien adventures, his latest since 2005’s War of the Worlds. Whether or not the aliens in Disclosure Day are more like tripods or ETs remains to be seen, but undoubtedly the film will be a contender for the top spot at the box office.
