Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/1/26

Horror, as a genre, has had a very solid track record at the box office even in these uneven times for moviegoing. But to have two horror movies unseat Star Wars as the top movies in theaters was pretty much unheard of before this past weekend. Backrooms surged to the number one spot at the box office with a massive $81.4 million, one of the biggest opening weekends for a horror movie ever. Hot on its heels was Obsession, which continued to improve its box office numbers in its third weekend, grossing $26.4 million to pass $100 million overall.

Obviously, this one-two punch came at the expense of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, which moved to third place in its second weekend with $25 million. Going all the way back to 1977, no Star Wars feature film has ever been knocked out of first place at the box office after just one weekend. It’s possible The Mandalorian and Grogu could rebound going into June, but it’s not going to be the smash hit Disney and Lucasfilm were undoubtedly hoping for.

In fourth place, Michael grossed $11.6 million to bring its domestic total to $339 million. Fifth place went to newcomer The Breadwinner from comedian Nate Bargatze, which opened with $7.5 million. The first weekend in June sees the long-awaited Masters of the Universe, as well as the return of the Scary Movie franchise (with the aptly named Scary Movie).
