Box Office Round-Up ~ 7/13/26

It’s been hard to pin down the exact formula for success for this year’s blockbusters. While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Toy Story 5 have seen big numbers for franchise sequels, Star Wars, Supergirl and now Moana have struggled to find an audience. In the case of Moana, Disney may have been premature trying to capitalize on nostalgia by remaking a movie that’s only ten years old (and had a sequel just two years ago).

The new Moana (starring a returning Dwayne Johnson) debuted to a disappointing $43.1 million. That’s lower than the original Moana’s $56 million opening back in January 2016 and a far cry from Moana 2’s $139 million debut in 2024. Disney can look forward to Spider-Man: Brand New Day later this month, but it’s been a bumpy road so far for them in 2026.

Minions & Monsters moved to second place with $21.5 million in its second weekend, a decent number compared to their underwhelming debut. They’ve cleared the $100 million mark so far domestically. Toy Story 5 grossed $31 million in third place to pass $400 million in the U.S.

In fourth place, new release Evil Dead Burn debuted with $13.7 million. That’s lower than 2023’s Evil Dead Rise’s $24.5 million but still a very solid number for the enduring low-budget horror franchise. Young Washington rounded out the top five with $6.9 million to reach $33 million total domestically. This coming weekend, the new release field has been more or less cleared to make room for the arrival of Christopher Nolan’s long-awaited The Odyssey, which is projected to do… well, epic numbers in its opening weekend.
