Box Office Round-Up ~ 7/13/25

All eyes were on the sky this weekend as Superman made its much-anticipated box office debut. The beginning of a new cinematic DC Universe spearheaded by writer/director James Gunn, the latest reintroduction to Clark Kent was a rock-solid success, grossing $122 million domestically, the best opening weekend for a Superman feature film ever. Positive word-of-mouth will likely bolster Superman through this coming weekend, before Marvel and DC face off on July 25 with the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
In second place in its second weekend, Jurassic World: Rebirth grossed $40 million, passing $230 million overall in the U.S. F1: The Movie also continued its successful box office run, finishing in third place after three weekends with $13 million for $132 million overall. How to Train Your Dragon took fourth place with $7.8 million, while Elio rounded out the field with $3.9 million.
This coming weekend sees a trio of interesting new releases. After a pair of franchise attempts at Sony (Live-action/animated The Smurfs and The Smurfs 2 in 2011 and 2013, followed by the fully animated Smurfs: The Lost Village in 2017), Paramount Animation takes a crack at Smurfs, this time led by vocal stylings of Rihanna as Smurfette. Writer/director Ari Aster (Hereditary, Beau is Afraid) returns with pandemic-era dark comedy Eddington, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal. And last but certainly not least, I Know What You Did Last Summer finally gets a proper nostalgia reboot, starring a new cast of hook-based murder victims and a returning Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze, Jr.
