Box Office Round-Up ~ 1/20/26
Avatar: Fire and Ash retained the top spot at the box office over the long MLK Day weekend, grossing $14.4 million in its fifth weekend in theaters. It’s closing in on $400 million domestically, and will likely hit somewhere near $1.5 billion worldwide when all is said and done. And while it was bolstered by positive critical and audience reaction, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple failed to win its debut weekend, taking second place with $12.5 million. It’s a sharp drop from 28 Years Later, which opened with $30 million last year, but it’s possible positive word-of-mouth will give the sequel some legs going into February.
Zootopia 2 took third place, becoming one of the top ten highest grossing movies of all time worldwide in its eighth weekend, grossing $9.1 million to reach $390 million and $1.7 billion worldwide. The Housemaid grossed $8.5 million to clear $100 million in the U.S. after five weekends, while Marty Supreme returned to the top five with $5.4 million, putting it on the cusp of $80 million overall.
This coming weekend might not pose much of a threat to Avatar’s box office prospects, with the release of A.I. crime thriller Mercy, starring Chris Pratt, horror video game adaptation Return to Silent Hill, and the wide release of Amanda Seyfried-led awards contender The Testament of Ann Lee.
