Box Office Round-Up ~ 12/8/25

The “possessed robot animal” sequel won out this weekend over the “cute talking animal” sequel, as Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 debuted to an impressive $64 million. It’s not quite as much as the original’s $80 million opening back over Halloween weekend in 2023, but the previous FNAF wasn’t up against big hitters like Zootopia 2 and Wicked: For Good. Numbers aside, it’s a welcome success for Universal and has probably guaranteed a Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 in the near future.

Speaking of Zootopia 2, it finished its second weekend with $43.4 million, passing $220 million domestically. Besides The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants on December 19, it’s the only major family-friendly option for the rest of the year and should see good legs going into the holidays. Wicked: For Good moved to third place with $17.3 million, putting it just shy of $300 million overall domestically.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution continued the anime’s successful run at the U.S. box office with $3.48 million, while Now You See Me: Now You Don’t took fifth place after four weekends with $3.42 million.

In two weeks we’ll see the aforementioned Spongebob movie alongside Avatar: Fire and Ash, so next weekend is more low-key selection of new releases. Among them is Dust Bunny, the directorial debut of Bryan Fuller (TV’s Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, Star Trek: Discovery), as well as James L. Brooks’ Ella McKay, the latest remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night, and a big screen re-release of the live-action How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
