Box Office Round-Up ~ 12/29/25

Any concerns that Avatar: Fire and Ash was underperforming were put to rest over the past weekend, as James Cameron’s third trip to Pandora pulled in $63 million over the weekend plus an additional $20 million-plus over Christmas. It’s already cleared $215 million in the U.S. and over half a billion worldwide. It’s on track to put up comparable numbers to Avatar: The Way of Water, which bodes well for the franchise’s future.

In second place, Zootopia 2 cleared $300 million domestically with a fifth-weekend gross of $19.8 million. Between that and Avatar: Fire and Ash, plus Lilo & Stitch and The Fantastic Four: First Steps earlier this year, Disney has had a wildly successful 2025, clearing $6 billion worldwide.

Elsewhere in the top five, Marty Supreme moved from tenth to third place in its second weekend, expanding wide and grossing an impressive $17.7 million. Josh Safdie’s solo directorial debut is doing better numbers than, and ultimately looks to outgross, 2019’s Uncut Gems (which he co-wrote/directed with brother Benny Safdie).

In fourth place, The Housemaid grossed $15.3 million in its second weekend, while legacy sequel/reboot/parody Anaconda debuted in fifth place with $14.5 million over the weekend for $23.5 million total since its Christmas premiere. As 2025 draws to a close, the first weekend of January (aka New Year’s Day weekend) is relatively light on new releases, with thriller The Plague expanding wide alongside the limited releases of psychological thriller The Dutchman (starring André Holland and Kate Mara) and zombie flick We Bury the Dead (starring Daisy Ridley).
