Box Office Round-Up ~ 5/27/25

Disney won the box office once again over Memorial Day Weekend with the opening of Lilo & Stitch, the latest live-action remake of their vast animated feature library (the original Lilo & Stitch was an unlikely hit back in 2002). Garnering positive critical and audience reactions, the new Lilo & Stitch grossed an impressive $146 million over its first three days, the second biggest opening weekend of 2025 so far. It took in $182 million over the four-day holiday weekend for the biggest Memorial Day weekend opening ever.

After the disappointing performance of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One two years ago (it was the first victim of the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon), Paramount likely hoped Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning would be a rebound for the almost thirty-year-old Tom Cruise-led series.

Originally intended to be filmed back-to-back with Dead Reckoning Part One, The Final Reckoning was delayed by Covid and then by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, ultimately becoming one of the most expensive movies ever made at nearly $400 million. That is all to say that its second-place debut at $64 million is likely something of a letdown, despite being the biggest opening weekend in franchise history.

The usual suspects rounded out the rest of the top five, with Final Destination: Bloodlines taking third place with a sophomore weekend gross of $19.3 million. It will likely clear $100 million domestically before the end of the month. Thunderbolts* passed $170 million overall after four weekend, taking in another $9.6 million. Last but not least by any stretch, Sinners finished six weekends on the big screen with $8.6 million, putting it past $256 million in the U.S. for the second-highest grossing movie of the year, though Lilo & Stitch is going to catch up fast.
