Box Office Round-Up ~ 9/19/22

Hail to the Woman King. The fall movie season arrived in force this weekend, with three new releases taking spots in the top five. While its overall numbers were modest, The Woman King easily won its debut weekend with $19 million. The historical epic, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and led by Viola Davis, was a hit with both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and CinemaScore. Expect some solid staying power in the coming weeks. Horror title Barbarian came in second place with $6.3 million in its sophomore weekend, while two new releases jockeyed for third place. Period slasher Pearl, Ti West’s surprise sequel to X, grossed $3.12 million — a huge success considering the film’s small budget — while murder-mystery comedy See How They Run was close behind with $3.1 million. Rounding out the top five was summer holdover Bullet Train with $2.5 million, putting its overall domestic gross at $96.4 million, with $100 million within reach in the next couple weeks. Next week sees the wide re-release of Avatar, in anticipation of its long-awaited sequel later this year. Whether the former highest-grossing film of all time can reclaim the top spot on the all-time list remains to be seen, but next week is very likely the Na’vi's to lose.
