Box Office Round-Up ~ 8/8/22

As the summer movie season draws to a close, Sony Pictures’ Bullet Train pulled into theaters with a debut gross of $30.1 million. The ensemble actioner, led by Brad Pitt benefited from the summer’s biggest hits starting to wind down their theatrical runs, and should capitalize on a quieter field of competition in the next week or two. (Top Gun: Maverick fell out of the top five for the first time since its release back in May.) In its sophomore weekend, DC League of Super Pets grossed $11.2 million, putting it on a similar overall pace to The Bad Guys, this year’s previous talking animal animated caper. Jordan Peele’s Nope came in third with a weekend total of $8.5 million. It’s on track to clear $100 million domestic by next weekend. Its overall numbers are lower than Get Out and Us, but still nothing to sneeze at for an R-rated horror title released in the heart of the summer. In fourth place, Thor: Love and Thunder grossed $7.6 million and passed Thor: Ragnarok as the highest-grossing Thor movie domestically. Similarly, Minions: The Rise of Gru’s weekend total of $7.1 million puts it at $335 million domestic, just a million short of passing its predecessor, Minion and not too far behind Despicable Me 2 as Gru and the Minion’s highest grossing adventure.
