Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/13/22

It seems fitting, in this age of nostalgia, that the only way to unseat the sequel to the biggest hit of 1986 was to unleash a new sequel to the biggest hit of 1993. And while Top Gun: Maverick performed well in its third weekend, it was no match for Jurassic World: Dominion. The sixth film in the Jurassic Park series debuted a massive opening weekend haul of $148 million, the biggest debut of 2022 so far (surpassing Top Gun: Maverick’s $126 million earlier this month). And considering that both Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom easily cleared $1 billion worldwide, it seems highly likely that Dominion could do the same. Turns out dinosaurs still rule the Earth, at least at the box office. Despite getting stampeded by the prehistoric newcomers, Top Gun: Maverick had a solid showing in second place, with a weekend total of $50 million. It should easily clear $400 million domestically by next weekend, as the sequel has—appropriately—taken moviegoers’ breath away. The rest of the top five were the usual suspects of the past several weeks. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness took third place with $4.88 million. It will also likely pass $400 million domestic over the next week. However, it also makes its streaming debut on Disney+ on June 22, which may put a damper on its box office numbers. The Bob’s Burgers Movie took fourth place with $2.33 million, and The Bad Guys followed close behind in the fifth spot with $1.6 million. It should be noted that the DreamWorks Animation action comedy has spent eight straight weeks in the top five, no small accomplishment for any film. However, two new family-friendly animated titles are fast approaching… Lightyear this coming Friday, and Minions: The Rise of Gru on July 1. And if anyone can compete with the dinosaurs of Jurassic World at the box office, it’s those Minions. 1.
