Box Office Round-Up ~ 1/30/23

January 2023 ended much like it began, with two sequels to movies from over a decade ago atop the box office. Once again, Avatar: The Way of Water reigned supreme in its seventh week at number one, with $15.9 million. If it can hold onto the crown through the beginning of February, it will match only Titanic for consecutive number-one weekends (though it’s unlikely to surpass Titanic’s staggering fifteen-weekend streak).

In second place was DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which rode positive word-of-mouth—not to mention a recent Oscar nomination—to a rock-solid $10.4 million in its sixth weekend in theaters. Third place saw a surprise hit from Bollywood in actioner Pathaan, which grossed $6.8 million in its U.S. debut. Rounding out the top five were Tom Hanks drama A Man Called Otto with $6.6 million and horror hit M3GAN with $6.2 million, both showing surprisingly solid holds from prior weekends.

Some of the most notable successes at the box office this week occurred outside the top five, as a diverse field of nearly a dozen movies all cleared $1 million apiece. Among them were new release thriller Infinity Pool from Neon, faith-based Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist, Chinese import The Wandering Earth 2, concert documentary Billie Eilish Live at the O2, and a trio of newly minted Oscar nominees, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Women Talking, and The Whale.
