Weekly Sports Roundup - 10-31-17

Perhaps the only industry with more movement than Hollywood is professional sports. We'll recap it all here in our regular look at the happenings across the world of sport.

It was an absolutely wild week in sports, both on the field and off. With all four major American leagues underway for the only time all year, each league competed to dominate the headlines. There were NFL owners making news for all the wrong reasons, the World Series delivering some of the most ridiculous games in postseason history, and the topsy-turvy beginnings to the NBA & NHL seasons.

MLB
Sunday's 13-12 barnburner in Game 5 of the Astros-Dodgers series was the second-highest scoring game in the 113-year history of the World Series. While Houston's comeback devastated LA, it meant great news for The Legacy Agency. Walk-off hero Alex Bregman, star shortstop Carlos Correa, and stud centerfielder George Springer are all signed to TLA, by Brodie ScoffieldGreg Genske, and Kenny Felder, respectively. Genske also represents Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner, who has been one of the best hitters in baseball over the last few seasons, and leads the majors with 4 home runs and 14 RBI's this postseason. The series returns to Los Angeles with the Astros leading 3-2 and ISE client Justin Verlander on the mound tonight for Houston. The Dodgers will counter with curveballing southpaw Rich Hill, a Sam and Seth Levinson signing, in a rematch of Game 2, another extra-inning classic in a series that has been full of them.

NFL
It wasn't all good news for Houston sports however, as Texans owner Bob McNair stepped in it this week by being quoted as saying "we can't let the inmates run the prison," in reference to letting players dictate terms of the never-ending standing vs. sitting national anthem debate. Texans players were so angered at the reference to criminality that nearly every single one knelt during Sunday's game at Seattle. Star receiver DeAndre Hopkins, a CAA and Tom Condon signee, even refused to practice during the week. On the field, rookie QB Deshaun Watson, an Athletes First and David Mulugheta signing, continues to look like a future star by becoming the first rookie with 3+ TD passes in four conseuctive games, doing it this time against an elite Seahawks defense. He continues to make the teams that passed on him in the draft look foolish, teams like the Cleveland Browns, who went with Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer as their signal caller of the future. Kizer, a fellow Athletes First client with Brian Murphy, has the worst TD:INT ratio in the league and has played no small part in Cleveland falling to 0-8 in London on Sunday. There's always next year, Browns fans.

NBA
The NBA is officially underway and perhaps no player has taken the early season by storm quite like Milwaukee Bucks do-everything wing Giannis Antetokounmpo. The 22-year old Greek swingman is averaging close to 35 points and 11 rebounds per game on 63% shooting, and is certainly the early clubhouse leader for league MVP. He's proven to be an incredible investment for Octagon Basketball and agent Alex Saratsis. The agency is well-positioned thanks not just to Giannis' exploits but also due to the presence of two-time MVP and NBA champion Stephen Curry, as agent Jeff Austin continues to represent one of the single most recognizable and productive players in recent NBA history. Yet Octagon also has an eye towards the future, with promising rookies OG Anunoby of the Raptors and Bam Adebayo of the Heat being represented by Chris Emens and Alex Saratsis, respectively. Big things are ahead in the basketball world for this global sports agency.

NHL
The NHL season has also recently begun and the talk of the league is the unprecedented early success of the expansion Vegas Golden Knights. At 8-2 and sitting in third in the conference, the Knights have defied all expectation by becoming the first team in the 100-year history of the NHL to win eight of their first nine games as a franchise. While the Golden Knights were expected to be lead by veteran goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, the longtime Penguin and Allan Walsh client has been sidelined with a concussion. Instead, young Swede Oscar Dansk, also an Allan Walsh client, and former Boston Bruin Malcolm Subban, a Don Meehan signee, have minded the net for Vegas. Offensively, the Golden Knights have had a balanced attack, with winger James Neal their points leader at seven goals and three assists. Neal, a Pat Morris and Newport Sports Management client, came over from the Western Conference champion Nashville Predators in the offseason. Only time will tell if the Golden Knights can keep this up, but you can bet the league office is rooting for the newest franchise to prove the doubters wrong all season long.
