Series Snapshot ~ 6/19/2025

Given how many of last week’s winners were back-to-back repeats, we’ll shake things up this week and give some of the #2’s an honorable mention. It’s hard to compete with cultural behemoths like Grey’s Anatomy and General Hospital, but getting a close second deserves a nod.

We also hit an important milestone in video media this month- according to the latest Nielsen data, streaming made up the majority of content watched in the month of May, surpassing cable and broadcast for the first time ever. Broadcast made 20.1% of total viewership, cable made 24.8%, and streaming made up more than both combined at 44.8%. Cable and broadcast have notably been decreasing in viewership year after year, while streaming and other services like YouTube have increased. The company commented that we may see this pendulum shift back, especially when we enter football season, but overall this trend is expected to continue.

For Netflix, Ginny and Georgia once again claims the #1 spot, but a new limited series, The Survivors, has steadily climbed the charts, ahead of Sirens, and takes position as the second- most watched show this week. The Survivors, which premiered June 6th, is an Australian crime drama based on the novel by Jane Harper. Premise-wise, the fictional town of Evelyn Bay, Tasmania, is rocked by tragedy where a powerful storm claims the lives of three locals. Fifteen years later, a young woman is murdered, and the town starts to realize that the two events may be connected. The Survivors stars Charlie Vickers, Yerin Ha, Shannon Berry and Robyn Malcolm

General Hospital extends its winning streak this week, with Love Island UK taking the runner-up. Love Island, a new iteration of an earlier, 2005 reality series of the same name, began its 12th season on June 9th, and viewers are eagerly jumping into the drama, scandals, love and loss that made the series famous. For the uninitiated, each week, islanders are eliminated unless they “couple up” and viewers vote on who they want to stay. Periodically, “bombshell” contestants are introduced to create new dynamics between contestants and keep things fresh. The dating series has 22 different international versions, but the UK version is the most predominantly watched. Love Island UK is narrated by Iain Stirling, and typically runs about 40-50 episodes per season.

Max saw popular animated series Rick and Morty officially claim the #1 spot, with And Just Like That taking #2, by a close margin. The continuation of Sex and the City might just be watched out of curiosity, as the show is getting unfortunately panned by fans and critics, with a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 29%. Currently in its third season, the show stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixonand Kristin Davisas they navigate relationships in their 50’s. The series did not see the return of fan favorite Kim Cattral, who reportedly isn’t interested in reprising her role from the original series, and also has had difficulty working with Parker. Some feel the show is weaker because of the loss of the character, who’d previously been a staple. Fans also bemoan poorly written dialogue, and unrelatable circumstances that make the show feel hollow and out of touch.

Over at Amazon, The Better Sister takes a victory lap after winning last week, and an exciting new action comedy Good Boy clinches the #2 spot. Good Boy is an original series from South Korea, in which former all-star athletes are recruited to fight crime as police officers. The series premiered in Bangkok May 31st, and has been widely praised for its production value, sound track, acting and comic-book flair. The series stars Park Bo-gumKim So-hyunand Oh Jung-seand was directed by Shim Na-yeonRight now, there’s no news on whether the show will continue with a second season, but it wouldn’t be surprising based on the response so far.

AppleTV has done a great job lately of creating a fresh lineup of original IPs. Stick has maintained its spot at number one, and Apple’s top 10 list has seen shows like Murderbot, Severance, The Studio, Your Friends and Neighbors, and Shrinking repeatedly draw in big crowds. Stick, which launched its way to number #1 last week, is a fine addition to the steadily growing library of AppleTV originals, and is being praised for its originality, humor, and pacing. The sports comedy led by Owen Wilson released June 4, and also stars Peter Dager, Lilli Kayand Marc Maron

While AppleTV has been producing copious new originals, Disney+ has had a somewhat uneventful month for new material. Now that Andor has concluded, almost every series in Disney’s top 10 list is an established show such as; Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family, Bluey, and The Simpsons, all dominate viewership week to week. It makes sense the company may be taking a moment to regroup and assess new ideas, perhaps in the Star Wars universe, but for now, Grey’s Anatomy  will hold its place as the most watched series on the streaming platform this week. Grey’s Anatomy stars Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, Jr.
