Series Snapshot ~ 6/12/2025

While this week saw many repeat winners, Netflix shook things up with a new, third season of its popular dramedy Ginny and Georgia, which premiered June 5th. The series follows the story of mother Georgia Miller, (Brianne Howey) and her daughter Ginny, (Antonia Gentry), as they try to start a new life in New England, and evade Georgia’s dark past. Season 2 ended on a significant cliffhanger, which may have driven enthusiasm and it’s spot at #1 this week. Ginny and Georgia was created by Sarah Lampert, and has been renewed for a 4th season, which based on the show’s schedule may release sometime early in 2027.
At Hulu, another victory lap for long running soap General Hospital. While the popular “Nurses’ Ball” generally sees a streaming spike, viewers are commenting that lately the Hospital’s writing has been particularly sharp, and the performances of the cast in tandem have ratcheted up the watchability, reaching a 15-week high in viewership. Additionally, two of the show’s most gripping storylines have climaxed, and an exciting recast of character Michael Corinthos, now played by Rory Gibson, have thrilled fans across the board.
On MAX, Rick and Morty finally officially hits number 1 after closing the gap on last week’s champ, The Last of Us. The apocalyptic drama has lost enthusiasm from fans with what was generally agreed to be a weak finale. Rick and Morty is currently in Season 8 on Adult Swim, but MAX doesn’t have access to the new episodes until later this fall. Still, it makes sense that fans are re-watching the previous seasons, perhaps to refresh on certain plot points. Rick and Morty is known for being an ironic, self-aware parody of sci-fi genre tropes, but also strangely is rife with poignant commentary on philosophy, ethics and the meaning of life. The animated series has an overarching, complex plot, and because of the gap between seasons, viewers need to brush up on everything that has happened so far. New episodes air Sunday nights at 11PM ET on Adult Swim.
Amazon’s The Better Sister has proven to be “the best sister” for another week in a row. In fairness, there haven’t been any particularly exciting new releases on the platform this week, so it didn’t have much competition. The show is being praised, but not raved about, on Rotten Tomatoes, critics score the series at about 71%, while audiences rated it higher at 79%. The Elizabeth Banks and Jessica Biel led limited-series is only 8 episodes, and was always intended to be a standalone project, but that hasn’t stopped Amazon from renewing one-off series in the past. It seems to be a pattern lately that limited series are doing quite well; Sirens was only 5 episodes and audiences loved the “snackable” drama. In this day and age, it’s easy to be daunted by the thought of starting a new show that has dozens of seasons, and can even feel like homework getting caught up. Additionally, popular shows often end up overstaying their welcome and running out of material, being renewed well beyond their lifespan by networks demanding return on investment.
AppleTV has a new sports-comedy series this week – Stick, which stars Owen Wilson, and took the place of Your Friends and Neighbors at number 1. In Stick, retired golfer and now club salesman Pryce Cahill (Wilson), spots a talented young golfer, Santi (Peter Dager) and takes him on tour, and under his wing. Stick also stars Marc Maron, Lilli Kay, and Mariana Treviño, and premiered June 4th. Thus far the series has been well received, but it’s unclear if Stick will return for a second season, or end up “taking a bogey.”
Over at Disney+, medical drama behemoth Grey’s Anatomy extends its stay as most watched series of the week. Its recent finale and cliffhanger left several characters' fates in question, and has remained popular despite concluding May 15th. The series boasts nearly 450 episodes in total, which gives it a major advantage in that viewers who are picking up the show for the first time will have no shortage of content to binge, inflating the series’ position in the charts. Grey’s Anatomy stars Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens, Jr. and will pick up where it left off this fall.
