Box Office Round-Up ~ 5/12/25

Mother’s Day weekend saw little change in the top five at the box office, as Thunderbolts* held on to the top spot for a second weekend in a row, grossing $33.3 million to pass $120 million overall. These are comparable numbers to Captain America: Brave New World earlier this year, but Thunderbolts* has the benefit of stronger word-of-mouth from audiences and critics, two groups eager for a return to form (or perhaps a change of pace) for the MCU.
Sinners capped off a stellar first month in theaters with $22.1 million, putting it past the $200 million mark domestically. It also passed such luminaries as Wedding Crashers, 300 and A Star is Born to reach the top 20 highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time. It’ll just need to knock off Logan, The Exorcist and a few Hangovers to reach the top ten.
A Minecraft Movie celebrated six weekends on the big screen with $7.6 million, just clearing $400 million overall to solidify its spot as the highest grossing movie of the year so far. (Sinners is the second highest and Thunderbolts* is fourth, so the year remains young in many ways).
The Accountant 2 took fourth place with $6.7 million after three weekends, while fifth place swapped one horror movie for another, as Clown in a Cornfield took over for Until Dawn, debuting with an opening weekend of $3.6 million.
This coming weekend sees a horror franchise rebooted with Final Destination: Bloodlines, as well two other new releases: haunted house flick The Ruse and psychological thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow, led by The Weeknd and Jenna Ortega. The following weekend is where it gets interesting numbers-wise, with the arrival of latest (and perhaps last) of the Mission: Impossible saga alongside Disney’s live-action remake of Lily & Stitch.
