Series Snapshot ~ 6/26/2025

The Waterfront, a brand new series from creator and executive producer Kevin Williamson has made quite the splash on Netflix this week, surging its way to number 1 past last week’s Ginny and Georgia. The Waterfront stars Holt McCallanyMelissa Benoist and Jake Weary, who play the Buckleys, a family with a fishing empire in North Carolina that happens to dabble in crime. Shot on location in North Carolina, and also featuring Topher Grace as a recurring guest star. No news yet on a potential season 2, but the finale left that possibility open-ended, and considering the series was well received – highly likely.

For Hulu this week, interestingly, the most watched “series” is an abc news program, 20/20. The reason for this is certainly due to a recent episode “They Know Everything” a tantalizing true crime story about a killer, who after being convicted of murder, attempts to fabricate exonerating evidence from prison, creating a web of deception. The program goes in-depth to all of the false narratives, evidence and scheming, and saw the show shoot up to number 1 as a result. While there’s not a cast per say, 20/20 was created in 1978 by Roone Artledge, who is no longer with us, but continues today with anchors David Muir and Deborah Roberts. True crime has become a massive genre recently, making up nearly a quarter of all top-ranked podcasts, according to a Pew Research study.

Over at MAX, Rick and Morty again takes the number 1 spot, followed closely by And Just Like That… but since those shows have been top lately, let’s take a look at an HBO original that placed just behind at number 3 - The Gilded AgeThe Gilded Age is a historical drama from series creator Julian Fellowes, and takes place in the high society of New York City during the 1880’s. Now in its third season (which premiered June 22nd) the series stars Carrie CoonMorgan SpectorCynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski. The latest season is being received well, scoring an 88% on RottenTomatoes, with critics praising the writing for digging deeper than previous seasons and a substantial increase in production value.

At Amazon, a new series has shot to the top of its “most watched” list this week, We Were Liars, a psychological thriller based on the novel by E. Lockhart. The series revolves around a young group of wealthy teens, primarily Cady Sinclair, (Emily Alyn Lind) as she struggles to recollect her memory in the aftermath of a disaster. While the series currently sits at number 1, its reviews are mixed, with some comparing it to Succession, only with less depth. We We Liars also stars Caitlin FitzGerald and Mamie Gummer, and comes from creator Carina Adly MacKenzie.

AppleTV’s new comedy Stick takes second place this week, behind Murderbot, which premiered about a month ago. It seems Murderbot has been gaining traction from word of mouth, and the series has had some time to percolate. With a whopping 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, users and critics credit the show for Alexander Skarsgård’s stellar acting performance. The show has also been praised for its ability to shift between action, comedy and poignancy, commenting on topics like AI and free will. Based on the fantastic reception, the show is getting more buzz about a potential season 2, which is looking more and more likely.

Disney Plus unfortunately has a somewhat boring lineup in its top 10 this week; Grey’s Anatomy, predictably, has once again taken the number one spot, with 2 -10 comprised of mostly established shows like Modern Family, The Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, and How I Met Your Mother. Disney’s new programming may be on hiatus for the time being, but looking ahead to the winter season, there will be new Marvel content in December, like Eyes of Wakanda and Marvel Zombies. In the meantime, Grey’s Anatomy stars Ellen PompeoJames Pickens, Jr, and Chandra Wilson
