Box Office Round-Up ~ 10/13/25

It’s been a rough few weeks for new releases, and it was always going to be a gamble to place box office hopes in the Tron franchise. The third and latest in the multi-decade Disney series, Tron: Ares debuted to a disappointing $33.5 million, less than 2009’s Tron: Legacy (which, it must be said, also ultimately underperformed). With a reported budget of $180 million, it seems unlikely that Tron: Ares will turn a profit. Despite the nostalgia factor and (at the time) groundbreaking effects of the 1982 original, this isn’t a franchise with a lot of legs, which might explain the decade-plus gaps between its three feature films.
Fellow new release Roofman took second place with a better-than-expected $8 million debut. The true crime comedy from director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, Sound of Metal) benefited from positive reviews, especially for Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst’s performances. It may not turn into a monster hit, but with a reported budget around $19 million, it has a lot less pressure to perform than bigger-budgeted awards contenders like One Battle After Another, which incidentally took third place with $6.6 million in its third weekend.
Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie took fourth place with $3.3 million, passing $26 million overall in the U.S., while new release Soul on Fire snagged fifth place with $3.3 million. This coming weekend sees another horror title for Halloween season, Scott Derrickson’s Black Phone 2, as well as the directorial debut of Aziz Ansari with Good Fortune.
