Series Snapshot ~ 10/16/26

Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.

Netflix’s brand new comedy series Boots, is the most watched of the week, as Monster slides in viewership to the second spot. Boots is the story of a young closeted gay man, Cameron Cope (Played by Miles Heizer), who follows his best friend Max (Liam Oh) into joining the Marine Corps in 1990. Together, the two recruits face a series of physical and emotional challenges along the way. The new series is being praised for its clever writing and its ability to walk the line between hilarity and poignant moments. Boots was created by Andy Parker, and based on the novel The Pink Marine, by Greg Cope White

Once again, Hulu original Only Murders in the Building takes the platform’s number one spot. The new season of Only Murders released September 9th, and has been receiving, as per usual, exceptionally high marks across the board. Praise for the dynamic trio of Selena GomezMartin Short, and Steve Martin, remains as high as ever, and their lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry particularly shines this season, which focuses more intently on their characters’ interpersonal relationships. Only Murders in the Building was created by John Hoffman, and will likely be renewed for a sixth season, but that has yet to be officially confirmed.

Over at HBO Max, yet another consecutive victory for original series, Task. It’s always exciting to see a series start off as a slow burn, but begin to ramp up in both viewership and audience engagement as the writing and plot begin to unfold, which seems to be the case with Task. Audiences early on had commented that the pacing had felt a little slow, but now that Task has had time to accelerate, critics and viewers are more invested. Praise for the performances of Mark Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey, and Emilia Jones also continues, with some even suggesting Task as an Emmy contender. The series was created by Brad Inglesby.

At Amazon, smash-hit The Summer I Turned Pretty has proven to have staying power, claiming the number one spot again after dropping significantly in the charts. Series creator Jenny Han has done a great job marketing the series and generating hype, hinting that while the series has concluded, the story may continue in the form of a feature film currently in development. The Summer I Turned Pretty is still number one in many countries worldwide, indicating demand for more from the IP. The Summer I Turned Pretty stars  Gavin Casalegno, Lola TungChristopher Brineyand Rain Spencer.

AppleTV’s most streamed this week is new limited series The Last Frontier. The gritty environmental thriller, despite taking the top spot, is receiving somewhat poor reviews. The series follows the crashing of a prison transport plane in the Alaskan wilderness, causing dangerous criminals to escape. Critics and audiences seem to be in agreement that what was a promising premise has been somewhat fumbled by clumsy writing and generic cliches. It’s not all bad though, as series lead Jason Clark is receiving praise for his performance as US Marshall Frank Remnick, and there’s also some shoutouts for Frontier’s special effects. The Last Frontier also stars Dominic Cooper, and Haley Bennett, and was created by Jon Bokenkamp.

Disney’s most streamed of the week is once again crime-comedy High Potential. The highly anticipated second season of the series has been receiving rave reviews. Critics have rated season two higher than general audiences, but everyone loves lead Kaitlin Olson’s performance as Morgan Gillory. The new season is about halfway through, and will continue weekly until its finale on October 28th. No news yet on a renewal for a third season, but there’s definitely “potential” there. High Potential was created by Drew Goddard and also stars Daniel Sunjata, and Javicia Leslie
