Box Office Round-Up ~ 4/23/24

In one of the slowest weekends of 2024 so far, Civil War retained the top spot with a sophomore gross of $11.1 million. It has grossed $44.4 million overall in the U.S., putting on a pace to become one of A24’s top five biggest successes ever. In second place, vampire ballerina Abigail (from the creative team behind Ready or Not and the recent entries of the Scream franchise) debuted with $10.2 million, in what looks to be yet another solid theatrical run for a horror release.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was the only other returning release in the top five, taking third place with $9.5 million. It has now grossed $171 million domestically in its first month. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, from director Guy Ritchie, debuted in fourth place with $8.9 million, while Crunchyroll’s anime import Spy x Family Code: White rounded out the top five with a respectable $4.8 million.

Next weekend sees the theatrical re-release of Alien (in anticipation of Alien: Romulus later this summer), as well as the debut of Challengers from director Luca Guadagnino and star Zendaya, neither of which are expected to pull in blockbuster numbers as theater chains to look to May and bigger releases like The Fall Guy, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
