Box Office Round Up - 7-16-2018

Dracula may have gone on vacation, but he certainly didn’t miss out on a box office win this week as Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation took the number one spot this week with $44 million. This put the third entry in the franchise just a little bit behind 2015’s Hotel Transylvania 2. Considering that this film went up against the juggernaut that is Incredibles 2, this is a strong start. WME should be very pleased with this as they rep director/co-writer Genndy Tartakovsky, co-writer Michael McCullers and stars Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez. UTA reps co-star Andy Samberg.

Dropping into second place from last week with $29 million was Ant-Man and the Wasp. This was a 62% drop (the largest drop for a sequel in the MCU). But this isn’t such a big deal; domestically the film has made $133 million, while globally it has made $283.7 million to date.

Coming in third with $25 million was the week’s other newcomer, Skyscraper. This was a disappointing start for the action film, falling short of industry expectations. On the other hand the film is doing fairly well overseas, taking in $40 million. So on the whole, not all bad. The folks at WME shouldn’t be too upset by this result as they rep writer director Rawson Marshall Thurber and stars Dwayne Johnson and Pablo Schreiber. CAA reps co-star Neve Campbell.

Dropping to fourth place with $16 million was Disney/Pixar’s Incredibles 2. The film has now made $535.8 million domestically, and is the highest grossing animated film of all time. Worldwide, the film has now made $322.6 million

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom dropped into fifth place with $15.5 million, and has now made $363.3 million domestically and $771.4 million worldwide. It is now the eighteenth largest worldwide release of all time.

Falling out of the top five and into sixth place is The First Purge, while Sorry to Bother You expanded its release and came in seventh. Sicario: Day of the Soldado fell to eighth place, while basketball comedy Uncle Drew dropped to ninth. Ocean’s 8 rounds out the top ten.

Next week: Three sequels go head to head! Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep will be joined by Cher in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, Denzel Washington returns to mete out brutal justice in The Equalizer 2, and Blumhouse will drop the webcam horror film Unfriended: Dark Web. Will any of them take the top spot?
