Box Office Round-Up - 10-8-2018

Box Office Round-Up - 10-8-2018

Is it fair to say that the box office numbers for the first weekend in October were scary good? The much criticized Venom opened with a robust $80 million, and the much praised A Star Is Born brought in another $43 million, all told. Both projects are CAA-heavy, with Venom stars Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed, as well as director Ruben Fleischer, and A Star Is Born writer/director/star Bradley Cooper and star Lady Gaga all being repped by the agency. WME has all three Venom screenwriters, as well as actresses Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate.

Smallfoot stomped its way to third place with $15 million, for a domestic total of $43 million, while Night School fell to fourth place, bringing in $12 million for a total of $47 million domestic.

Fifth place went to The House With a Clock in Its Walls, which now has a total domestic gross of $55 million.

Rounding out the top 10 were: A Simple Favor ($4.3mm/$49mm), The Nun ($2.6mm/$113mm), Hell Fest ($2.1mm/$8.9mm), Crazy Rich Asians ($2.1mm/$169mm) and The Predator ($900k/$50mm).

Next week: We will continue to trend of prestige and genre fare being released side by side, with Damien Chazelle’s First Man opening opposite Drew Goddard’s Bad Times at the El Royale.
