We've seen actors branch into other areas of work: actors who sing, actors who model, actors who dance – many actors are multifaceted, talented performers. There are more actors than you might expect who write screenplays, poems, and other works. Some actors are well-known for their writing, such as Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who wrote and starred in Good Will Hunting. Other actors who started as comedians are also known for writing their own roles, such as Adam Sandler and Seth Rogan. Here are some current multitalented actors who you might not know as writers.

Carrie Fisher

Her most famous role is Princess Leia, but Carrie Fisher has had many more roles. Her novel Postcards from the Edge is a best-seller and was adapted into a movie. Fisher's autobiographical works include Wishful Drinking and Shockaholic, detailing her life with mental illness and addiction. Fisher also works as a "script doctor" polishing scripts for Hook, Sister Act, The Wedding Singer, the Star Wars prequels, and more. 

Emma Thompson

Emma Thompson has acted in theatre and movies, but she also won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1995 for adapting Sense and Sensibility for the big screen. She also wrote the screenplays for both Nanny McPhee movies. 

Thomas Lennon

You might know Tom Lennon from a variety of roles, including parts in Hancock, The Dark Knight Rises, and I Love You, Man. Lennon's also known for creating and starring in the TV show Reno 911! He's also written movies such as Taxi and Night at The Museum. He and his writing partner also have a book about screenwriting called Writing Movies for Fun and Profit

John Cusack

The Say Anything... and Being John Malkovich star has branched out into writing and producing. John Cusack has written and produced several movies he's starred in, including High Fidelity and Grosse Point Blank. He has even written political commentary online.

Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe is known for acting in films such as the Harry Potter series and The Woman in Black. He's also published poetry under the name Jacob Gershon. The actor has also mentioned that he wants to expand his writing to short stories.

Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone is best known as a tough guy from movies such as Rocky and The Expendables. Stallone also wrote the script for Rocky after being inspired by a boxing match between Muhammed Ali and Chuck Wepner. Stallone has also written scripts for films such as First Blood, Cliffhanger, and Over the Top.

James Franco

James Franco has had roles in TV and movies, including Freaks and Geeks, Pineapple Express, and This is the End. In recent years, Franco has expanded his field from acting to painting as well as writing books and movies. He even offers a low-cost online course for beginning screenwriters.

Jason Segel

Jason Segel has had roles in How I Met Your Mother, Freaks and Geeks, and The End of the Tour. After landing his role in How I Met Your Mother, he was able to gain enough backing to write his own roles in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He was also pivotal in bringing the big screen revival of The Muppets to life.

Owen Wilson

Owen Wilson has been in movies such as Wedding Crashers, Zoolander, and, Starsky and Hutch. He’s also been a writer throughout his career, starting with his debut in Bottle Rocket. He’s also written extensively with Wes Anderson to create movies such as The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited, and Rushmore.

Mindy Kaling

You might know her best from her TV work on The Office and The Mindy Project, but Mindy Kaling has also accomplished a lot with her words. She was instrumental to bringing the American version of The Office to life, including writing and producing responsibilities. Her book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is a best-seller, and he show The Mindy Project showcases even more of her abilities.

Tina Fey

Tina Fey made history as the first female head writer for Saturday Night Live. Before that, she had extensive experience in improv, including with Second City. In addition to her acting, she also created and wrote for the TV show 30 Rock.  Fey has also written and acted in movies such as Means Girls and Baby Mama.


There are many actors who can also create roles for themselves and others. Some of these talents may be surprising, but they can be found in a wide range of professionals.
